How do I know if I need to see an Occupational Therapist of Speech Pathologist?

Every child develops at their own pace, but we get it, it can be hard to know when extra support may be helpful. When you hear OT, think every day activities and skills (including fine and gross motoro development, sensory processing, emotional regulation, coordinaton, coordination and independence with daily activities. SPs can support children with their communication (including understanding and following instructions, developing language and expressing their needs and ideas, and speaking clearly. We believe in referring early, none of this "wait and see" approach here. At the end of the day, if you have a concern about your child's development, want to understand them and the way they experience the world better, or don't know exactly what support they need.. we are here to help you work out where to start and what might best support your child and family.

What’s the difference between speech and language?

Speech is how we say sounds and words (including how clearly your child speaks and how easily they can be understood). Language is how we understand and communicate, including the words we use, how we combine them into sentences, how we communicate our thoughts, ideas and needs. Children may experience challenges with speech, language or both. If you aren't sure what you are noticing, we are here to help you understand what is going on and where to start.

Does my child need a referral?

No you don't have to have a referral, you can self refer by completing our intake form! However, it is always worth chatting with your GP if planning to access services to assess your eligibility for subidised sessions under either a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan (GPCCMP) or M10 Plan.

How do I book an initial appointment?

First you complete our intake form, then you will be waitlisted. As soon as we have a suitable spot available, we will give you a call to offer a spot!

What happens during the first appointment?

Your initial appointment is spent with us asking quite a few questions to get to know your child and your journey so far. We talk through what has brought you to us, concerns or questions you have, and what you'd love support with. We share about our therapy approach, what support may look like and next steps we recommend. Our first appointment is always via telehealth - We find this makes the juggle that little bit easier, and gives us space to talk openly about your child and any challenges without listening ears nearby!

How long are appointments?

Session length varies, however most of our sessions are either 45 minutes or 60 minutes face to face.

How often will my child need to attend sessions?

We offer either weekly or fortnightly sessions, depending on your child's needs, goals and what works best for your family. We find this frequency is the right balance of regular support, giving time to practice and implement strategies.

Where do appointments take place?

We have our beautiful Chelsea Heights clinic, and also offer mobile based services in your child's natural environment (this may be home, childcare, kinder, school, the park or play centre... wherever the goal is, we want to be!

Do you offer telehealth or online appointments?

Yes! We love the flexibility telehealth offers and the way it can make therapy fit more easily into family life. Depending on goals and needs, telehealth may look like direct therapy with the child, or a more consultative approach focused on building caregiver skills and confidence to support your child between sessions. We are always keen to work with you to find the approach that works best for you!

Can parents/carers stay during the session?

Absolutely, we actually encourage it! Parents and carers are critical part of a child's therapy journey (and life in general) - We believe the best outcomes come from building your skills and confidence to support your child beyond the clinic/session. Even with weekly sessions, your child spends less than 10% of their week in their therapy session. That's why we focus on working in practical strategies and ideas that can be woven into real life, meaning therapy extends well beyond the direct session. If we aren't seeing your child in the clinic (maybe at school where you aren't), we liek to schedule regular parent sessions so that we are still implementing a family-centred, best practice approach. At TKN we see parent and caregiver involvement as an essential component of therapy input, not an optional extra

Will you work with my child’s school, kinder or daycare?

Yes without a doubt! We don't believe in working in silos. Your child is part of a bigger world, and the best support comes when the important people around them are working together. With your consent, we love collaborating with schools, daycares, other therapists and members of your child's support team to share information, align goals and develop meaningful and consistent strategies across environments. We pride ourselves at looking at the whole child, not just one skill or area of development.

What happens if my child doesn’t want to participate in therapy?

That's okay, its our job to meet your child where they are at! We don't believe therapy should be about forcing participation. We take time to build trust, connection, and safety. Often therapy might look different to what you expect (think less "therapy" and to the outside eye, more like play... because that is how children learn best! Behind the fun though... we are constantly using your child's strengths and interests to work towards their goals in natural and engaging ways.

How will I know if my child is making progress?

It is our job to make sure you know. Think less tick of a box, more noticing meaningful change in every day life. We collaborate with you to set clear, meaningful goals and regularly check in on how things are tracking. We share our observations in sessions, you share what you are seeing, and then we adjust along the way. Sometimes progress looks like a big milestone, and sometimes, its stacked with small moments that stack up (we are here to celebrate all of them!!)

Do you accept NDIS funding or other funding options?

Yes, we work with families across a range of funding pathways including NDIS funding (self- and plan-managed), and private fee-for-service (this includes medicare and private health insurances). If you want more information about funding pathways and options, we know it can be tricky to understand your options, always happy to chat through this!

What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule an appointment?

Life, we get it! If you need to cancel or reschedule, just let as know as soon as you can. We ask families to provide at least 2 business days notice where possible to give us the best chance at offering this spot to another family. Our cancellation policy does apply to late cancellations and missed appointments, but we always work with you where we can to offer alternatives such as resources, consults with the care team, telehealth, etc.

What should I bring to my child’s first appointment?

Just yourself, good Wi-Fi and a cuppa! If you have any relevant information, sending it through before your appointment is super helpful. This may include referral letters, NDIS plans, previous reports, handovers, etc. This helps us come prepared and make the most of our time together

Do you provide reports or recommendations for schools and other professionals?

Yes absolutely - We always account for collaboration and report writing throughout your journey. We want to write reports based on what you need (ie a letter of clinical observation to support diagnosis, funding access, progress reports or recommendations for school, rather than just another one that goes into the bottom drawer never to be seen again!
